Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research aims to explore a novel application of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for characterising the adhesion mechanics of bacterial spores. It will investigate the physical mechanisms by which dormant micro-organisms adhere to surfaces via their influence on effective properties of the fluid layer, such as mass-trapping, viscous-coupling, fluid viscosity and fluid density, at the surface of a shear oscillator. A deeper understanding of this primary phase of biofilm development represents a fundamental scientific objective that has profound long-term relevance across many industries. The requested support will pump-prime collaboration at the Lifesciences interface, between the Institute for Food Research (Norwich) and the Engineering Department (Lancaster University).
