Image-guided surgery (IGS) is rapidly becoming accepted as a necessary part of Neuro-, ENT and orthopaedic surgery. Experience from the original MAGI project has led us to new avenues of research that aim to make image-guided surgery simpler to use, more accurate, less invasive, less costly and above all more effective. We will do research necessary to develop a simple, fast and accurate segmentation tool using data from a registered atlas in regions where the patient's anatomy is sufficiently normal and image/user driven methods elsewhere. We will develop new applications of intraoperative ultrasound for both rigid bone registration and correction of soft tissue deformation. For visualisation we will provide stereo augmented reality both in the operating microscope and other devices, such as endoscopes. Correct depth perception will be achieved by incorporating the results of basic vision research performed outside MAGI II. We will also look at the possibility of verifying the tumour boundary from the image, usually PET, by using IGS to relate this to histology. The system will provide an economically competitive solution that will widen the scope of procedures that can use IGS, benefiting other researchers, hospitals, surgeons and patients.
