Fluidized beds have been successfully employed in the development of small-scale pilot plants for waste management systems and energy production from renewable sources. However, development of efficient and cost-effective commercial scale of such process technologies still represent a major challenge. It is within this framework that the proposed research programme is to address some of the fundamental issues to advance the development of such technologies. The fluidization behaviour of solid materials will be selectively changed by enhancing the role of the interparticle forces, such as those caused by the presence of additives on the particles' surface, over the hydrodynamic force. This is to simulate some of the phenomena that occur during the waste recycling and incineration process. Novel/analytical techniques are used to provide a measure of the interparticle forces. The aim of the research is to develop a methodology to link dirt measurements of interparticle forces to fluidization behaviours. This is a fundamental aspect to predict fluidization and to develop new fluid-bed process technologies.
