An expanded turbulence consortium is proposed that will conduct research into many aspects of the turbulence problem. These include simulations of canonical turbulent flows as well as predictions of practical configurations. New simulation techniques will be investigated and new models, whether for conventional RANS codes or for the sub-grid element of large eddy simulation, will be developed and tested. Much of this work is already funded, through EPSRC or other sources, with staff in position, at least for the first part of the proposed research programme. The final stages of the work are projections based on past experience. What is being applied for here is: (a) a core allocation of high performance computer (HPC) time to enable mebers of the consortium to carry out simulations comparable in size and complexity to those of our major international competitiors, (b) central support for this work, located at the Daresbury Laboratory, to enable further code parallelisation, optimisation, data management, and porting of codes to new HPC platforms as they are installed in the UK (two new systems are planned to be installed during the first 12 months of the proposed work), (c) travel money for regular meetings of the Consortium together with a Workshop in the final year, to enable the mmbers of the Consortium to interact more closely. Aspects of this include the sharing of data from simulation and the development of new collaborative research- projects.
