Summary on Grant Application Form
One of the major trends of modem semiconductor research has been towards the achievement of electron and photon states of lower dimensionality. In line with this trend the proposed theoretical work is aimed at understanding the properties of zero-dimensional photonic states and their interaction with the zero-dimensional excitonic states of quantum dots. In particular, different types of photonic nanostructures, providing full 3- dimensional localization of light will be studied. The theoretical models and better physical understanding that result from these studies will be applied to propose the design of optoelectronic devices with enhanced properties, with particular attention being paid to the concept of the thresholdless semiconductor laser.Zero-dimensional photonic states themselves, and also when coupled to the electronic states of a quantum dot, can be considered as promising candidates for the realization of the elementary units of a quantum computer, since solid state devices are more experimentally feasible than those, based on individual atoms. Optical microcavities could provide an opportunity for the control of electron states in quantum dots, such as coherent manipulation and measurement, thus promising access to new techniques in conventional as well as quantum computation. Therefore various physical effects originating from the coupling of zero-dimensional photon and electron states with potential for application in quantum computing will be investigated.
