Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a request to support through a VF a closely coupled analytical-numerical modelling approach to investigate the propagation, nonlinear frontal dynamics and the transport and mixing properties of three-dimensional unsteady geostrophic currents with external stratification as they propagate over topography. The study will focus on asymptotic limit equations incorporating rotational, buoyancy and topographic effects including the effects of nonlinear oscillations of geostrophic fronts predicted by the theory and observed in recent numerical and laboratory experiments. The interdisciplinary nature of the proposal (applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, meteorology) should beneficially impact on the development of improved modelling incorporating Coriolis effects on orographic and mesoscale flows.
