Summary on Grant Application Form |
The workshop will bring together groups working on potentially consistent frameworks for the study of ecosystem dynamics with the aim of reconciling the approaches into one that incorporates the most favourable elements of each. The primary concern is to find a methodology capable of linking ecological timescales (i.e. those associated with individual behaviours such as growth, reproduction and dispersal) and evolutionary timescales (i.e. those associated with the emergence of new functional types and species), and which is capable of linking diversity to its consequences in functional terms. It is only in these terms that issues of global change, sustainability and ecosystem evaluation can be addressed. The methodology must be intimately linked with experimentation and employ experimentally amenable parameters. Towards this goal, we will explore suitable model experimental systems including plant communities, microbial communities and host-parasfoid systems. The conclusions of the mini-workshop will be summarised in a report to be posted on the web and, if appropriate, will be the subject of a review article by the participants.
