Summary on Grant Application Form
Goverment has identified the need to raise the status of walking as a mode of transport, and pedestrians should be able to cross roads easily and safely. Pedestrian priority (zebra) crossings give priority in principle to pedestrians, but there is currently interest in the development and use of more informal crossing places. The effectiness of crossing facilities therefore needs to be assessed appropriatley. This project seeks to identify whatfactors make a crossing place east to use both for pedestrians and for other road users. Factors will be identified through workshops with road users as both pedestrians and drivers and as pedestrians only and through observation of video recordings to identify which measure or act as proxies for good or poor usability. The outcome will be used to develop a PC based framework to assess the usability of crossing places, demonstrated through a comparison of zebra crossings with one type of informal crossing place. The project will produce recommendations for the selection of existing types of crossing place, and the framework will provide a tool to assess new and innovative designs of crossing places taking into account the needs of the wide range of users.
