Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project seeks to build on the foundations laid down during a previous grant by delivering an extensive programme of lecture demonstrations and `hands-on' workshops to schools and communities in Scotland and Northern England. These presentations aim to explain the methodologies and technologies which are an integral part of research, using readily accessible language and ideas. We intend to reach as wide an audience as possible and reach sectors of the public who may not be familiar with scientific methodolgies, e.g. older people, women's groups, communities living in remote areas that do not have opportunities to visit science festivals and science museums. Three further themes will be developed, Exciting Electrons, Metals in Medicine, and Creative Chemistry, which together with material developed during the previous grant (Living in a Material World and Hot Chemistry) will form the basis of the presentations/workshops. Once established through face-to-face contact, links with communities will be maintained by our web-site which will feature a free registration scheme that encourages them to take part in other scientific activities. The success of this registration scheme will provide a measure of the effectiveness of our activities. Additional financial support (15,000) for the project has been secured from a local Trust. Chemical companies based in Scotland and Scottish Enterprise have been approached for the additional 12,350, but the outcome of this appeal is not yet known.
