Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to carry out EELS on carbon-, carbon-nitride and boron-carbon-nitride nanotubes with manometer spatial resolution in a cold FEG STEM. We will study inter/intraband scattering, plasmon and core losses with unconventionally high energy resolution down to 2eV in this materials system. No run-spatially resolved spectroscopy has been carried out so far in the energy regime of and below the x-plasmon. We will accompany the measurements by calculations of EELS spectra, under consideration of the scattering geometry and the specific shape of the respective feature. We will extract chemical and electronic information, e.g. concerning the bonding and local (joint) density of states from comparison of experimental and modelled spectra, and, owing to the spatially resolved nature of the measurement and simultaneous microstrucural information, aim to identify sites of B and N.
