Summary on Grant Application Form
Methods for the modelling of convective and radiative heating of fuel droplets, based on advanced models developed by researchers from the University of Brighton in collaboration with Dr L Dombrovsky (Russian Academy of Sciences) and Dr P Krutitskii, (Moscow State University, Russia), will be investigated. These models take into account the effects of semi-transparency of droplets, their finite thermal conductivity and internal recirculation. The impact of these models on the predictability and computational efficiency of the numerical modelling will be examined. These models will be further developed for their specific applications to diesel engines and possibly other types of internal combustion engines. These developments will take into account the gradients of thermal conductivity, density and specific heat capacity inside droplets due to the temperature dependence of these parameters, and radiative properties of fuel in various spectral bands (spectral models for thermal radiation). Also, the effects of non-homogeneous radiative heat generation inside droplets will be studied. The applicability of these advanced models to the simulation of combustion processes in diesel engines will be investigated. The models will be validated against engine data, and their computational efficiency will be assessed.
