The current proposal is concerned with a feasibility study for making muRilayer integrated, electrochemical sensors composed partly or wholly of PoIyHIPE (PHP) membranes with different functions. We believe that the properties of PHP, such as high, controllable, porosity and permeability, robustness and ability to be cast easily using simple moulding techniques, make it well suited to the preparation of components for integrated sensors that will overcome many of the shortcomings of current devices. We will prepare individual PHP layers of thickness down to 0.5 mm with appropriate functionalities (imparted either by immobilisation or moleculear imprinting of suitable ligands, enzymes, conducting matenals, analytes) and test the physical properties of each individual layer. Subsequently, composite layers will be assembled and tested. Ultimately, our multilayer sensors will comprise: a top-layer of nonfunctional PHP of controlled porosity to filter particulate contaminants (soil, dust, blood cells); a pepsin containing protein scavenging PHP middle layer, and a sensing bottom layer, in contact with the electrode. The latter will consist of a conventional plasticised PVC membrane containing a suitable ligand, for potentiometric sensors, or a conducting PHP layer with immobilised ligand for amperometric sensing. In this preliminary project, sensors will be tested under laboratory conditions, only.
