Summary on Grant Application Form |
The compositions of near surface regions, about 2 nm thick, of aluminium alloys are modified in composition and structure by surface treatments (eg alkali etching acid pickling); in particular, enrichements of alloying elements and impurities can develop beneath oxide films. The study will probe these regions by MEIS to determine the structures and compositions within the zone of influence, where enrichment and clustering of species, formation of fine intermetallic, and generation of disordered material may occur, with impact on film properties.
