Summary on Grant Application Form
Following the outcomes of the EPSRC/IEE workshop on Research Themes in Robotics with some 80 attendees from over 30 institutions held in London in October 2000 it was agreed that it would be desirable to establish a network which would provide a UK focus for the field of advanced robotics research and facilitate inter-institutional collaboration in this highly interdisciplinary and interdependent field. The background to the proposal is the perceived fragmentation of the field of advanced robotics research in the UK and a lack of support for essential blue skies research, which contrasts to the growing cohesion within the European Community as characterised by the establishing of the recent EU funded EURON network and the growing collaboration between the USA and Japan on a series of robot projects.A network is proposed, which will bring together core research groups, industrial users, manufacturers, suppliers and systems integrators who are engaged in robotic research and associated technologies such as sensors, actuators, AI, advanced systems architectures and HCI. Application domains include construction, transport , medical, agriculture, off- shore, nuclear, manufacturing, aerospace, entertainment.
