Summary on Grant Application Form |
Generating test data using evolutionary test data generation has been shown to be successful, but its effectiveness is significantly reduced in the presence of programming styles which make the definition of a suitable fitness function problematic. The Terra project will adapt traditional transformation so that it can be used to improve evolutionary testing by removing these features. This will require a new approach to program transformation, in which it is a program's test sets which are preserved (relative to a test data coverage criterion) rather than its behaviour (relative to a notion of semantic equivalence).By removing the impediments to automated generation of test data, Terra will have a significant impact upon both the quality of test data produced and upon the effort required to produce it.
