Summary on Grant Application Form |
Atrial reentries (flutter and fibrillation) are common sustained arrhythmias causing long-term morbidity. The mechanisms underlying the genesis of atrial reentry are not clear yet. We aim to develop hierarchical mathematical models of human atrium at single cell, 2D tissue and 3D anatomical levels, and develop stable and efficient numerical algorithm to solve the 2D and 3D models. Using these models we plan to investigate mechanisms underlying the genesis of atrial reentry, roles of inhomogeneities of the tissue properties (intrinsic and disease induced), disorganisation of conduction pathway, interaction with non-excitable obtacles (valve openings) on the initiation and maintenance of atrial reentry. We also aim to simulate the excitation pattern of human atrium at normal and abnormal conditions, and validate these simulations with experimental and clinic recordings. This will provide a better understanding the nature of atrial re-entry and possible new insights for clinic treatment.
