Summary on Grant Application Form
The first purpose of this project is to develop a toolbox for sparse matrix computation that will combine the complementary strengths of the HSL subroutine library and the interactive Matlab environment. In addition to the practical work of interface design and implementation, we plan to take advantage of the resulting framework to explore new algori ideas in some key areas. One such area is ordering to reduce the cost of solving symmetric indefinite sparse linear systems that arise in nonlinear optimization and the solution of saddle point problems occuring in the discretization of pde's, where our intent is to develop capabilities that are beyond those currently offered by either HSL or Matlab.
