To improve engine efficiency and to reduce harmful emissions to the atmosphere, internal-combustion engine developers have a critical need for knowedge, on a sub-cycle time-scale, of the distribution (and temporal development) of hydrocarbon fuel within the engine cylinder prior to ignition, how this relates to inlet and exhaust flows. Near-IR Absorption Tomography (NIRAT) has-been demonstrated at UM IST as an all-optoelectronic extremely fast technique, requiring minimal optical access and disturbance of the engine. If a number of further engineering and scienctific challenge can be overcome, a system based on NIRAT could be provided on a commercial basis to users whose expertise lies outside of the domain of lasers optics.The application of NIRAT to running engines of port-fuel injection and direct gasoline injection types is challenging, particu larly in the latter case. V propose a new beam-launch geometry, higher modulation frequencies, extension to port measurements of hydrocarbon concentration, as well as image reconstruction of spray patterns based on scattering attenuation. The proposed research will result in the following major deliverables: 1. Design of in-cylinder imager and port sensors. 2. Implementation of the system hardware, implementation of the image reconstruction software and integratic both into a single system. 3. Integration of the system on engine and application to cold-start emission tests.
