Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a 2-year collaborative project between the Imaging Sciences Dept. at Hammersmith Hospital and the Electrical and Electronic Engineerir Dept., both of Imperial College. The aims will be to develop miniature MRI sampling probes for both in-vitro and in vivo use, and perform initial trials of clinica utility. The probes will be fabricated using silicon-based micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, and will therefore have the potential for ma: production, high accuracy and repeatability, and disposability. Three types of probe will be developed: an in-vitro probe containing a planar coil, an intermediat solenoidal coil, and an in-vivo probe based on a hollow silicon biopsy needle containing a solenoidal coil. In each case, the coil designs are more sophisticated than simple planar coils, the aim being to improve the strength and uniformity of the field. The applications include rapid diagnosis during operative procedures particularly brain tumour resection. Laboratory assessment will involve the characterisation of the probes using phantoms, particularly to measure the choline creatine ratio. Initial trials with clinical collaborators will aim to validate the use of such probes in a theatre-based MR system.
