Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will make use of a contaminated site that has been well characterised in terms of geochemistry, hydrogeology and microbiology to assess a range of manipulations for the enhancement of monitored natural attenuation in the source zone. These manipulations wil take the form of a number of cells containing amendements. These amendements include nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate and oxygen. Air sparging and oxidation will also be assessed. The field site will be characterised prior to the commencement of remediation in terms of microbiology, toxicity and geochemistry so as to determine baseline parameters. These parametrs will be further assesed over time along with the remedial amendements. Furthermore, laboratory scale microcosm studies will be carried out in parallel with the field scale studies and degradation rates determined. These will be compared to rates obtained in the field. The microbiology of the laboratory scale microcosms will be compared to the field scale microbiology studies and interpreted in conjunction with the geochemical data.
