Summary on Grant Application Form |
Interest in collisions involving positrons and positronium remains strong as new experimental techniques and theoretical methods are enabling increasingly stringent tests of the understanding of basic atomic and molecular collision phenomena as well as of fundamental antiparticle-matter interactions. Measurements of differential ionization and positronium collisions are in their infancy. LICL is a pioneer and world leader in this type of research and it retains the only operational Ps beam in the world. In the case of positron collisions, the proposed research aims to perform complete ionization experiments (i.e. yielding all the kinematical parameters) and to probe the details of positron-induced fragmentation (including ionization with and without positronium formation, dissociation and annihilation). The proposed programme further intends to explore experimentally projectile- and, for the first time, target- ionization using positronium projectiles. Novel positron neutralization methods will be examined to advance positronium beam production. This proposal, concerning important basic research and involving the training of young scientists, is consistent with the mission of EPSRC.
