Summary on Grant Application Form
Heat transfer and pressure drop in condensing flows in smooth, non-circular microchannels will be studied experimentally. A new range apparatus ( incorporating an exisiting well-instrummed boiler) will be designed and built for this purpose. Data will be obtained for two geometries and a range of channel dimensions. Two fluids, with widely different thermophysical properties, will be used. The experimental data will be used to validate, and improve as necessary, a theoretical model and present under development at Queen Mary. Provision will be made for investigating internally enhanced microchannels and preliminary experimental data obtained. Preliminary modelling of microfinned microchannel condensation will be undertaken. The proposeres and Research Assistant have wide theoretical and experimental experience of enhanced condensation and all three have benn involved in collaborative worj in this field with Kyushu University, Japan. Queen Mary and Kyushu University are arguably world leaders in this field.
