Reactions involving ions and electronically highly excited species play a significant role in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. In particular, hydrogen ion-molecule reactions are important in the outer, cooler regions of nuclear fusion plasmas. In ablation plasmas, reactions between highly excited, metastable Rydberg atoms and the process gas are likely to produce other excited atoms, ions or radicals all of which will have a significant influence on the plasma chemistry as a whole.This proposal seeks funding for a new, state-of-the-art, high-resolution experiment to study the dynamics of reactions of Rydberg atoms with molecules. The high quality experimental results will provide the input needed for plasma simulations and will allow stringent tests of future theoretical predictions of this only poorly understood type of reaction. The particular systems to be studied are H*+D2 (nuclear fusion) and C*+N2 or O*+H2 (ablation plasmas).The reactive scattering of Rydberg atoms is a new field of research which addresses many questions which are relevant for plasma chemistry. Both the proposed research and the experimental technique will be unique and internationally competitive.
