Summary on Grant Application Form |
Quantum computing and information technology exploit universal gates. Our project centres on a new concept for J-gates, which control the entanglement of two spins. Possible realisations of this new concept, involving the optical excitation of a control electron, are silicon compatible, and should be able to operate at room temperature. We plan (a) to create several such universal gates (both Jgates and A-gates), (b) to network these gates and to understand how such networks might be generalised to more complex systems, (c) to establish effective ways to initialise the system and read out from it, and (d) to package and interface the quantum system via fibers to other devices following standard silicon optical bench technology. Our aim is to make this new class of quantum gates in a system which is silicon-compatible (and so using standard but state-of-the-art methods as far as possible), and to demonstrate the operation of these gates in a representative quantum computation (perhaps similar to the NMR factorisation experiments) at a useful temperature (liquid nitrogen or above).
