It has recently been shown that efficient quantum computation could be possible using only passive linear optics, photo-detectors, and single photon sources. The initial scheme is over-complex and difficult to keep stable. Here we propose to develop simpler stable linear logic gates using polarisation and/or time-bin encoding. We hope to experimentally demonstrate these schemes. Initially this can be done using existing weak laser single photon sources and simple interferometers to show the principles. Secondly we will combine them with entangled states using linear optics methods to demonstrate the principle of cascadability. Thirdly we will develop single photon sources based on single quantum dots in microcavities. Such sources produce time-bandwidth limited single photons. We will then develop a cascadable CNOT gate based on combining true single photon sources with entangled state sources. This collaboration links the quantum logic expertise of the engineering and physics departments at Bristol University.
