Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research is concerned with the development of an optical backplane interconnection network between a dense array of electronic printed circuit boards mounted in an electronic equipment rack. The optical backplane consists of polymer optical waveguides laminated with printed circuit boards. This type of integrated optical and electronic component offers low electromagnetic emissions, low cross channel interference, low cost and this at high bit rates. The printed circuit board carries low frequency data signals including power to the daughter printed circuit boards. In this project several companies collaborate with UCL and Edinburgh University as part of a LINK project for the call Information Storage and Displays to develop an optical backplane which may be capable of operating at bit rates of 10 Gbit/s which are more commonly associated with optical fibre telecommunications for use by Xyratex, a company that manufactures racks of dense protected magnetic disc storage. UCL will collaborate with Terahertz Photonics on the modelling, understanding of the behaviour, design and optimisation of the various sections and component parts of the waveguide backplane. Multimode waveguides offer a low cost solution due to the ease of fabrication and alignment. The modelling, design and optimisation of a multimode waveguide optical switch and a wavelength selective element including the fabrication of gratings in polymer waveguides are part of this project.
