Summary on Grant Application Form |
Mathematical models for tissue growth in a bioreactor will be constructed. The models will primarily involve parabolic (reaction-convection-diffusion) models of mass transport and elliptic equations describing growth-driven tissue deformation, with a moving boundary delineating the edge of a growing cell colony. Asymptotic and computational methods will be used to produce physical insight into the parameter dependencies, together with robust numerical packages. The models will be validated against experimental data obtained by, interalia, the Tissue Engineering Group in the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nottingham.Various sub-problems will need to be addressed in the course of model development (cell seeding; mass transport; tissue growth; blocking and degradation of the scaffold; and fluid flow) and the various couplings between these phenomena will require accounting for in generating a widely applicable 'bioreactor function', which will provide a predictive tool for describing how bioreactor performance depends on scaffold and cell properties.
