Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is for the purchase of a high resolution ion chromatography system and additional columns to support two projects to measure to measure ion release in solution from a number of biomaterials currently under investigation, namely phosphate, based glasses and new dental cements being investigated. Currently we have the capability to measure ions via ion selective electrodes. However this is proving extremely time consuming and only a limited number of ions can be measured. The system being proposed for purchase in this proposal has a multisample changer for high throughput of samples and also the sample volume required is extremely small (of the order of 20ul). The final advantage of this system is that we can measure the form that the phosphate is coming out of the glass into solution. Some preliminary experiments using p31NMR have shown it is released as polyphosphates. The ion chromatography will allow much more sensitive measurements to be made and also to follow any subsequent changes in the phosphates in solution.
