|
Finite groups are of central importance in mathematics, and find wide applications in all the physical sciences and elsewhere. The building blocks of finite groups are the 'simple' groups, which fall into well understood families, and twenty-six 'sporadic' exceptions, the largest and most interesting of which is the Monster, which has attracted enormous interest. Attention is now focussed on studying properties of these groups, for example, their maximal subgroups, representations, Brauer characters, cohomology, etc. For the 'generic' groups, there is often a theory to explain and calculate some of these properties, but for the 'sporadic' groups no such theory exists. Our primary aim is to provide a database of such information about the sporadic groups, as well as other groups which are exceptional in some way. In particular we aim to construct explicit real representations in dimensions up to 100, finite representations in dimensions up to 1000, calculate 1-cohomology, and where possible 2-cohomology, for small representations, and provide whatever other information turns out within the lifetime of this project to be both useful and feasible.Keywords: Mathematics, Computing, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computational Group Theory, Representation theory, Sporadic Groups
