Summary on Grant Application Form
Wakes generated by free-surface piercing cylinders are of high importance in many marine engineering applications, ranging from structural loading in offshore structures to visibility and detection in submarine masts. High fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES) will be performed for sub-critical and low supercritical Reynolds numbers and Froude numbers higher than one. The free surface will be simulated using the 3D PLIC-VOF method due to the possible strong shear and rotation motion. The results will be used to investigate the 3D structure of the bow wave and its fountain phenomenon, force loading, vortex shedding and 3D characteristics of the wake. Numerical accuracy will be assessed by comparison to known experimental results. Databases will be produced and will be made available to UK researchers for further studies.
