Summary on Grant Application Form |
Dementia affects approximately 750,000 people in the UK. Recent drug developments have increased the need for accurate image analysis tools to quantify and localise cerebral structural changes in order to improve diagnosis and progression monitoring. We propose to develop techniques for the simulation of atrophy in MR brain images in order to validate and assess the performance of current state of the art quantification tools. We will do this by constructing a finite element brain model and developing biomechanical models of the various dementias. This will provide data with known applied volume change which will allow a critical evaluation of currently used techniques, something which to date has not been performed. The better understanding of any shortcomings of current techniques will then allow us to propose enhancements to these methods.
