Nuclear Magnetic Resonance has transformed the practice of chemistry by its ability to provide detailed chemical information from molecules in solution. Although NMR is used to study solid samples, the results from abundant isotopes, such as 1 H (hydrogen), are generally poor. Strong interactions between abundant spins result in broad featureless lines that provide very little information. Recent technological and methodological advances are beginning to change this picture. Fast sample spinning (exceeding 30,000 rotations/second) and sophisticated experiments allow I H NMR linewidths to be reduced significantly. Currently, however, there is little agreement about what determines the limit on linewidth.The proposed project involves using novel computational method to simulate what is happening in the NMR experiment, combined with experiments on different model systems, ranging from relatively easy ones where molecular motion reduces the strength of the linebroadening interactions, to normal solids. This combined approach should allow us to elucidate which factors, NMR-related and/or experimental, limit the resolution of 1H NMR in solids. This will allow us to improve 1 H NMR and open up new potential applications in e.g. biology and materials science.
