In this proposal we are interested in the acquisition of 3D non-rigid flexible models which represent the full geometry of an object, but in particular in acquiring them automatically in an unconstrained scenario: a single camera viewing an arbitrary 3D surface which is moving and articulating --- a model free 3D approach. In Computer Vision, there has been a large amount of work involving the acquisition of such 3D models. However, in most cases, they have required the use of additional information such as depth estimates available from 3D scanning devices, or have been specialised to the specific object under observation (for example physically-based human face models). Once these prior models have been defined, they can be used to perform robust visual tracking; a popular example of the moment is tracking of the human body for motion capture or face tracking for animation.Our approach will extend recent work in non-rigid factorisation by groups at Stanford and MERL. These methods can simultaneously infer the motion and modes of deformation of a non-rigid object but they currently suffer from limitations --- they only work under affine viewing conditions and require complete data (all points must be visible in all views). The main objective of this project is to address and find solutions to these limitations.
