Despite the early promise of ink jet printers to deposit complex patterns on pottery using ceramic inks, there has been limited progressin this field over the last 15 years. This is largely due to poor stability and dispersability of conventional ceramic inks, which are made via inefficient sintering and milling routes (i.e. ground from large to small particles). An alternative approach would be to build from the bottom up, i.e. to grow particles from molecular compounds.Using this approach, nano-sized(<100nm) or larger inorganic (ceramic) particles can be generated from mixtures containing supercritical fluids. This method holds many advantages for small particle synthesis without the use of large amounts of toxic organic solvents.
