Summary on Grant Application Form |
In our previous work we have developed waveguide structures which can be used to make simultaneous electrochemical and surface plasmon resonance studies of thin films at gold electrode surfaces and shown that these devices are highly sensitive to optical changes at the electrode surface. In this project we propose to apply these devices to study the properties of ultrathin multilayer films assembled by layer-by-layer deposition. The layer-by-layer deposition technique uses sequential immersion of the sample in dilute solutions of polyanion and polycation electrolytes to build up multilayer films one layer at a time. The method allows a high degree of control over not only the thickness of the films but also the sequence of layers. We propose to exploit this control to study the effect of film composition and thickness on the sensitivity of the SPR signal. We also propose to use our waveguide SPR device to study multilayer films containing redox enzymes (of interest for biosensor applications) or nanoparticles (of interest for materials chemistry or sensor applications).
