'Natural Attenuation' (NA) processes in the subsurface may be used to clean up contaminated land (CL). Thus, 'Monitored Natural Attenuation' (MNA) is being considered by environmental regulators as an acceptable remediation technology option for CL sites - providing there is appropriate evidence that NA is (and will continue to be) effective. The general strategy for demonstrating that MNA and/or in particular biodegradation is occurring involves essentially an increasing hierarchy of types of evidence (I through III). The overall Aim of this research is to provide to the greater UK contaminated land remediation & regulatory community field methodologies and protocols for the use of the carbon isotopic systematics (12C, 13C, and 14C) of C02 in contaminated soil gases and groundwater to give both indirect evidence (Type II (intermediate) level, through forensic signature characteristics) of NA processes and direct evidence (Type III (highest) level, in-situ degradation studies) of biodegradation at CL sites.
