This project aims to make links between cutting-edge EPSRC funded research in medical imaging, and science, engineering, maths and ICT within the Key Stage 4 (GCSE) curriculum. We want to make links between topics that are part of the core of the national curriculum, but also inspire the pupils with a taste of more advanced topics that they might come across at university. In particular we will: Establish a close partnership between a research group at KCL, and teachers and pupils at a local inner city secondary school (Walworth), and devise teaching activities based on medical imaging Target a group of around 15 pupils with high achievement in science, maths and ICT, to work regularly with them by means of an afterschool club, visits to the KCL research lab, and work-experience in a research lab to develop the teaching activities, and assist in implementing on-line material. By involving pupils and teachers alongside researchers in preparing the material we hope to maximise its relevance to the curriculum, and its interest to the target audience. Monitor and assess the target group in terms of their academic performance and interest in science/maths/ICT. Disseminate the material to schools in the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham with which KCL already has established links through the Access to Medicine Outreach Programme. The on-line medical imaging-related material will be linked in to the core-curriculum science web pages being developed through the separately funded Science and Health On-line (www.science-shrine.co.uk) project also based at KCL, enhancing the science-shrine web site and making our material directly available to the 65,000 pupils targeted by that project. Disseminate nationally by means of press releases to education journals, making on-line material available to all.
