Summary on Grant Application Form
Describe the proposed research using (about 200) words geared to the non-specialist reader.Prof Fernandez initiated the modelling of passenger activity at bus stops in the simulation of bus stop operations. This work is unique and the current project is designed to bring this expertise to bear on a number of ARG projects. It will relate significantly to current PhD work which is investigating the microscopic simulation of pedestrians and also to the development of research methods and questions at the initial stage of the PAMELA project (GR/S44631) which is due to start in January 2004. Prof Fernandez will work with Nick Tyler to develop the PASSION simulation model to include more comprehensive consideration of passenger arrivals at bus stops and their activities on the bus stop platform as well as extending the range of bus stop designs included in the model. Thirdly, the visit will provide the opportunity to examine the feasibility of linking PASSION to BusSIGSIM (Silva 2001), which was previously developed in the ARG. The outcomes of the research will be the improved PASSION model, dissemination to ARG researchers of relevant simulation methods, expertise about dissemination in Latin America and three papers, one concerning the passenger activity modelling issue, one concerning the feasibility of linking PASSION and BusSIGSIM and the other concerning the enhancements to PASSION.
