Active Pixel Sensors (APSs), based on the predominant CIVICS technology, are revolutionising the commercial world of solid-state imaging. This research programme, which brings together leading university research groups and the National Laboratories, will yield a far-reaching expansion of APSs into the scientific arena and address current limitations by exploiting novel techniques in microfabrication and signal processing, together with radically new chip architectures. Through novel substrate structures and the addition of micomachined elements entirely new tracts of the em spectrum will be opened up to high quality imaging - as well as major impact on particle detection. By the provision of generic on-chip adaptive signal processing, imaging performance will be optimised down to the pixel level. Combining such processing with flexible read-out schemes, focal plane feature recognition can be achieved yielding drastic reductions in data rates. Demonstrator systems will be developed in key scientific topics. New instruments will become possible following the development of this underpinning technology - changing the way in which many science researchers conduct their work. This programme will ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of scientific imaging technology and will have an exceptional effect on future UK scientific achievements on the global stage.
