Summary on Grant Application Form
This ambitious, multi-partner programme unites a number of key emerging UK competencies around the shared vision of an entirely new core technology of UV/Violet micro-optical projection systems, for inducing fluorescence and/or structural changes in organic materials in a finely-controlled manner. At the heart of these systems are innovative, high-density (>1000 elements per sq. mm) arrays of micrometer-sized light-emitting diodes based on AIGaInN/sapphire semiconductor structures in a new wavelength range (280-440nm). Such sources will allow high-frame-rate programmable pattern exposure, with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, for major impact in areas as diverse as polymer science, microfabrication and biophotonics. The programme aims to pioneer active imaging systems technology based upon these devices, and to demonstrate their power in four key areas, namely (i) biomedical imaging, (ii) micro/nano fabrication, (iii) light-emitting polymers, and (iv) biosensors. It seeks, furthermore, to promote the interaction between these areas under the common conception of UV-emitting microsystems.
