A supercomputer consortium will be formed to make use of the new HPCx facility for research in applied aerodynamics. The supercomputer time will be used to enhance work currently underway and to stimulate new lines. A strong collaborative aspect to the work is provided by the participation of groupings from the PUMA and rotor DARPs and the main consortia developing codes for Rolls Royce (Hydra) and WHL (HMB). The work programme is built around six themes: 1:High Fidelity Simulation of Helicopter Interactions; 2: Simulation of a free flying flexible aircraft; 3 Simulation of Vertical Landing Aircraft; 4 Simulation of Aeroelastic Response of Compressors; 5 Simulation of Internal Air System; 6 Miscellaneous Problems. Calculations made possible by the computer time will include the interaction of main rotor vortices with a tail rotor; free flying and flexible Hawk at high incidence; vertical landing aircraft in descent; compressor disc cavities at high Rayleigh number; flow physics of multi-stage core compressors. The supercomputer time will allow world leading calculations, stimulating research in aerodynamic driven nonlinearities and numerical methods. The ambitious test case results will be used to promote CFD and HPC in industry.
