Summary on Grant Application Form |
Ion beams can be used to study the way in which radiation interacts with living cells and tissues. They can also be used, quantitatively, to map the spatial and depth distribution of a wide range of elements (at ppm levels). The next generation of research is likely to employ much smaller beam diameters (50-100nm) which will enable much smaller structures to be irradiated and analysed, it will also allow the fabrication of biologically important nano-structures such as tissue scaffolds, stents, nano channels etc. .This project aims to establish a Network which will provide a forum for developing and directing leading edge UK research on the application of ion beams in biology and medicine and will bring together complementary experience and expertise from a wide range of disciplines. A key strategic task of the Network will be to ascertain whether there is a need for UK central facilities in this area and if there are what type of facilities are required. The second major theme of the Network will involve the training and interaction of young researchers from the Physical, Life and Medical sciences. This will be achieved through targeted courses, workshops, conferences and personnel exchanges.
