Summary on Grant Application Form |
The directed motion of Brownian particles in a macroscopically flat potential (ratchet effect) has recently attracted much interest as it may represent the key to understand the working principles of the molecular combustion motor. Several new mechanisms of rectification of fluctuations resulting into transport through macroscopically flat potentials have been recently identified through theoretical work. Optical lattices constitute the ideal test bench to investigate the various rectification mechanisms identified theoretically. The aim of the present proposal is to investigate experimentally the ratchet effect using optical lattices as a model system, and to test some of the rectification mechanisms recently determined through theoretical work.
