Particulate composites are a particular class of engineering material where the bulk mechanical properties depend on the structure and mechanical properties of the individual particles. Civil engineering materials that fall into this category include sands, granular materials, concrete and asphalt. To understand how these materials behave at the macro-scale it is essential to have an accurate representation of the internal microstructure so that the dominant mechanisms can be identified. Unfortunately, it is only relatively recently that non-destructive imaging technology has become sufficiently advanced for the internal structure to be investigated with the resolution that is required, which is typically of the order of tens of microns. The most suitable technique for mapping out the three-dimensional structure of this class of materials is high resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT).The aim of this Case for Support is to request funding to purchase a high resolution X-Ray CT system. The system will be located in the School of Civil Engineering and will be made generally available to other researchers at Nottingham. At present no such facility exists at Nottingham. Technician support to operate and maintain the system will be provided within the existing NCPE technical structure which comprises a laboratory manager, assistant laboratory manager and some 10 technicians. Full training will be given and is incorporated in the price of the equipment. The system will be made available for joint projects with other institutions to encourage inter-university collaboration in this exciting field of research.
