Summary on Grant Application Form |
Although there have been some preliminary investigations of the complementary nature of the conventional numerical approach to spray combustion modelling and the approach based on the application of the asymptotic integral manifold method, in which PI took an active part, the problem of combining them has never been studied. The latter problem will be the main focus of this investigation. Although this project will concentrate on the modelling of spray ignition processes in diesel engines, wider application of the results is anticipated. The asymptotic model will be incorporated into a stand alone numerical 1 D code for modelling droplet heating, evaporation and ignition. Advantages and limitations of this combined code when compared with a conventional numerical code will be investigated. Also, the feasibility of incorporating this model within a conventional computational fluid dynamics framework will be studied.
