This project will integrate results from previously sponsored EPSRC research into a commercial system capable of manufacturing metallic components of high complexity from controlled density base metal and alloy powders and mixtures thereof. The system will exploit these new production capabilities in the manufacture of micro heat exchangers, orthopaedic implants and ultra light structures for the aerospace industries. The micro heat exchangers developed will provide increases in performance over conventionally manufactured items because of the ability of the new system to produce tortuous paths of small cross section increasing heat transfer rates. The performance of implants will be increased by the ability to deposit porous hierarchical structures on the surface of implants providing increased osteointegration and reducing the need for revision surgery. Finally the application of these new techniques in the aerospace industry will allow the production of low weight biomimetic structures and assemblies of structures providing improved structural and thermal performance coupled with an ease of manufacture not possible up until now.
