Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to design and evaluate a new training system which will present X-ray images of air passenger luggage items, which may contain potential threat items, and discretely monitor how security screeners visually examine these. For each image the system will determine to which areas of the luggage item the individual has visually attended and not attended. These areas can then be highlighted and fed back to the screener, allowing them to re-examine the image and amend their various decisions about that image. Areas attended to, but where no threat item has been reported, signify potential areas of image complexity which may camouflage a threat item. Areas not attended to may contain potential threat items that have not been visually examined by the screener. The system will provide enhanced training. It will identify the underlying factors which produce sub-optimal performance and enable these to be targeted with appropriate training. It will also identify widespread luggage related factors where sc reeners have difficulties and then enable dedicated revision training to overcome these. This proposal is entirely novel and timely. It employs state of the art knowledge in visual search and cognitive psychology with the latest technology used in luggage screening.
