This project will develop a new method for the rapid manufacturing of engineering components and oral dosages and represents a disruptive step in the development of RM technologies. Up until the present time the majority of RM systems have relied on the use of a simple step-by-step noncontinuous approach to manufacturing. The method proposed herein creates a continuous additive manufacturing system allowing the parallelisation of solidification on many layers at once leading to huge increases in throughput. The proposal also introduces the possibility of manufacturing item from pre-placed powders with changes in material composition that will increase the flexibility of manufacturing. The newly developed system will be applied in particular to the manufacture of oral dosages where such fast, flexible manufacturing could provide a key processing route for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products which are patient specific increasing quality of life of patients taking multiple drug therapies. This will be completed by the development of a SGM system with inkjet based consolidation stations controlled by specially developed software. Producing simple primitive geometries that will be analysed both mechanically and clinically prior to the development of a full blown multiple arm system will test the efficacy of the system.
