Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project would involve the synthesis of a new class of wholly inorganic macrocycles, based on P/N ring units, using a new and potentially very general set of synthetic approaches. These species combine the spatial characteristics of the classic organic ligands calixarenes and porphyrins and are readily obtained under thermodynamic conditions. The new inorganic macrocycles have multi-facetted ligand behaviour and are capable of cation and anion coordination within or at the peripheries of their cavities. The investigation of the unique coordination chemistry of these systems is a major aim of the proposal. In addition, the macrocyclc frameworks provide excellent platforms for further elaboration into novel P(V) macrocycles (which are analogues of porphyrins) and for growth into P/N dendrimers. The new macromolecules are potential precursors to a large range of new molecular and polymeric arrangements, providing the means to an extended range of adamantane-like cages (crpyt analogues) and 2-D and 3-D polymeric materials.
