Summary on Grant Application Form
The exchange of ideas between mathematics and physics has a long and fruitful history. This proposal involves the organising by P. Bowcock (Durham), P. Dorey (Durham) and K. Wendland (Warwick) of a symposium in 2005 which will bring together leading researchers from both fields in order to achieve an active interchange of ideas within the informal atmosphere that an LMS Durham symposium can provide. In order to provide a focus, we shall concentrate on conformal field theory. This is an area which is coming to the attention of a broader mathematical community, while remaining a vital tool in physics. It links aspects of geometry, string theory, vertex operator algebras and quantum integrability, and therefore offers ample opportunity to find common ground for all participants at what we hope will be an exciting interdisciplinary symposium. The programme will be arranged in such a way as to encourage the communication of the latest ideas and results, but ample time will be allowed for informal collaborative contacts to be explored.
